In memory of the struggles that are our empire three years ago stood bravely on land and sea in far-off East Asia. A monument was to be erected in September 1904 in Tientsin but did not get erected until June 1905. The monument was designed by the Berlin sculptor, Professor Kuno von Uechtritz. The arch figure of a German knight in Gothic Armor stands atop one like a battle-ready Guardian Rock pedestal containing a frieze with the coat of arms of the German States girded. The strong corner finishes on the Steps bear round bronze shields with the names of the skirmishes and fights. But the knight himself, his chest decorated with a mighty Iron Cross and small eagles planted the imperial sword in front of him and spanned it the grip with the iron fist while the left on the Reich shield is supported. to the side of the knight halts crowned eagle facing right keeping watch; while clutches the anke of the “Iltis” in his fangs.
It is said that this monument was pulled down by British and French forces in Tianjin on the evening of November 11, 1918 with a big rope. What happened to it after it was torn down is not known, it may have been melted down or ? Any info appreciated....
